12 Books About Dinosaurs

Hello everyone! Today I’m here with a collection of my favorite books about dinosaurs. I hope you enjoy this collection! Most of these you can borrow from your local library.

I chose to do a collection about dinosaurs because they are a hot topic in our house with our 6 year old little boy. Dinosaurs are fascinating to little boys and girls and there are many great books that teach kids about dinosaurs in a fun way! Here we go!

Lulu and the Brontosaurus

1. Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Viorst – This adorable book is all about Lulu asking her parents for a dinosaur for her birthday. When she doesn’t get what she wants, she sets off into the forest searching for the dinosaur she desires! When she runs into a long-necked brontosaurus, things don’t go exactly as she planned…

If the Dinosaurs Came Back

2. If the dinosaurs came back by Bernard Most – This funny book is about a little boy who imagines all the “jobs” dinosaurs would have if they came back. Would they carry people to work? Or would they mow the lawn? This book is great for encouraging children to use their imaginations and decide what they think dinos would do if they came back.

How Do Dinosaurs Play with Their Friends?

3. How Do Dinosaurs Play with Their Friends? by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague – This is a funny, rhyming book about how fun it is to play nice with your friends. Not only does it feature silly examples, such as big dinosaurs, but it teaches a great lesson. Kids will love the funny illustrations and silly rhymes this book has to offer!

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs

4. Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems – This book is a brilliant re-telling of the classic, Goldilocks and the Three Bears! It’s so funny and engaging, much like other Mo Willems books! One day the dinosaurs decided to tidy up their house and make their beds, so they could go someplace. They weren’t going to wait around for a little girl to come over–no way!

Edwina

5. Edwina: The Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct by Mo Willems. I had to include another Mo Willems book because this one is a favorite in our house! Edwina is a dinosaur who still roams the earth, and behaves as if she’s a regular human citizen. There’s only one person who doesn’t like Edwina, and he’s out to prove that dinosaurs are extinct. What will happen to Edwina?

Dinosaur Vs. Bedtime

6. Dinosaur Vs. Bedtime by Bob Shea – Nothing can stop this dinosaur. NOTHING! But what happens when he’s faced with the biggest challenge of all…bedtime?!

Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs

7. Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs by Byron Barton – I love this book because it accurately depicts about dinosaurs – some are big, some are small – and the beautiful illustrations capture what may have been when dinosaurs roamed the planet. This book won the Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children in 1989.

Dinosaurs Roar, Butterflies Soar

8. Dinosaurs Roar, Butterflies Soar by Bob Barner – This is an AMAZING book that shows how a butterfly’s life intersected and interacted with a dinosaur’s life. Did you know that butterflies are as old as dinosaurs? This beautifully illustrated book is sure to please any young scientist.

The Magic School Bus in the Time of the Dinosaurs

9. The Magic School Bus: In the Time of the Dinosaurs by Joanna Cole – I’m a big fan of all Magic School Bus books because they are packed full of information! In this book, the bus turns into a time machine and goes back millions of years to the dinosaur times where the students learn about dinosaurs and their habitats.

Dinosaurs Love Underpants

10. Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort – If the title doesn’t scream humor, I don’t know what does! This wildly entertaining book is all about how dinosaurs got wiped out due to an underwear war!

Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp

11. Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp by Carol Shields – This is a rhyming fun book that’s great for all ages! What did dinosaurs do for fun? They danced! Join them for a boogie good time!

National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Dinosaurs

12. National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Dinosaurs by Catherine Hughes – This book is great for ages 4-8. It’s packed full of fun facts and fun information-each spread on a different dinosaur. The plus? There are tips and activities to keep the learning going even after the book is finished!

I hope you enjoy this collection and your little dinosaur lover finds a book that delights them!

  1. Love this list Erica! Just did a dino Story Time at my library and some of these titles were not on my radar! I will add them to the list for next year for sure. Dinosaur vs. The Library is also tons of fun (and a great book to discuss “library voice” and I also found a really cute book I bet your son would love called When Dinosaurs Came With Everything by Elise Broach – hysterical!
