Fall is in the air and with fall comes all the things we love! Pumpkins, cider, crisp leaves and APPLES! I’ve put together this collection of apple-themed books, so you can take it with you on your next Library Adventure!

Apples by Jacqueline Farmer is a simple informational text that shows how apples are grown, provides facts about apples, and a history on apples.

The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall is a story about two sisters who celebrate when their planted apple tree blossoms and grows delicious fruit! This is an informational book about how things grow. Best part? There’s a recipe for apple pie at the end!

10 Apples Up on Top by Dr. Seuss is a funny story abut three friends who balance and count apples on their head! This book is great for little ages who will delight in learning to count, while watching the characters perform various tricks all while having apples balancing on their head!

Apples and Honey by Joan Holub is a Rosh Hashanah book that celebrates the beginning of a New Year! The family celebrates with a delicious dinner of apples dipped in honey. This is a great cultural book and teaches children about the traditions of this special holiday.

One Green Apple by Eve Bunting is a story about a girl attending a new school. She feels very alone, and hardly ever speaks. Things begin to turn around when her class takes a field trip to an apple orchard, and she begins to realize some familiarities between her new and old cultures. It’s through the making of apple cider that she finally begins to connect with the other students.

The Biggest Apple Ever by Steven Kroll is a book about two mice who want to win their school contest and find the biggest apple at the apple orchard. The question is who will win? Will they work together? The ending is very surprising!

Red Are the Apples by Marc Harshman and Cheryl Ryan is a rhyming book about all of the things you can pick in a vegetable garden. The sing-song words and bright illustrations make this a fun book to explore.

A Was Once An Apple Pie by Edward Lear is a fun alphabet, rhyming, picture book that is great for a younger crowd. It’s full of silly verses with a happy, funny rhythm.

Max’s Apples by Rosemary Wells. I included this book in the collection for the younger children who are familiar with Max and Ruby. Sometimes familiarity with a character delights the child with the book. There are shiny foil apples on the illustrations throughout the book which are very eye-catching. When Ruby asks Max to pick apples from the tree, she doesn’t understand why he wants so many. Until she realizes that he wants her to bake a pie!

Apple Cider Making Days by Ann Purmell is a story about 2 kids who join their family in the process of making apple cider at their grandfather’s farm. This is a story about tradition being passed down from generations.

Annie the Apple Pie Fairy by Tim Bugbird is the story of Annie, who is a TV chef and Apple Pie Queen. Her position as queen is threatened when another fairy comes in and makes her pies using state-of-the-art machinery! How will Annie save her homemade pies? **Note: This book is from the UK, and may not be easily available in all libraries or for purchase.

Bad Apple by Edward Hemingway is the story of an apple who befriends a worm. Along the way the apple gets bullied because apples aren’t supposed to like worms. This is a great book that teaches children that it’s ok to stand up for something or someone, even if no one else does.

Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg. What’s a collection of apple books without the story of Johnny Appleseed? I included Steven Kellogg’s version because of his illustrations and how magical they are. This is the true story of John Chapman and his legacy of scattering appleseeds throughout his travels.

Apple Fractions by Jerry Pallotta is a book that uses a variety of apples to teach children about fractions. There are hands-on demonstrations that are used to teach children how to cut apples in 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and more!

That’s it for this Apple book collection! I included a variety of different books to make a cohesive “theme”. It’s important when teaching children that your “theme” covers all subject areas. This collection contains non-fiction, fiction, social studies, and math books to touch all subjects. To add to the fun, you and your child could have a cooking class and make some homemade apple pie!
