20 Literacy Activities for Kids Who Love DogsAugust 26 is National Dog Day. If you have a dog, or your child wishes you did, commemorate the day with these fun dog-themed literacy activities.

  1. Play dog show. (See my pet show game for ideas!)
  2. Sing BINGO.
  3. Design a dog collar, and write your dog’s name on it.
  4. Sing Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?
  5. Read a dog story. (Great suggestions are available from our own Vicki Arnold as well as A Mom With a Lesson Plan and Boy Mama Teacher Mama.)
  6. Play Doggie Doggie Where’s Your Bone?
  7. Sing Bingo’s Doghouse.
  8. Draw a dog, then write a story about it.
  9. Write a note on dog-themed stationery.
  10. Make a card for a dog you know.
  11. Sing How Much is That Doggie in the Window? Repeat the song and put the dog in other locations, such as a basket, wagon, or stroller.
  12. Learn the names of dog breeds using illustrator Jim Harris’s flashcards set.
  13. Make a list of other words that end with -og.
  14. Read to a dog. (Some libraries sponsor regular sessions with therapy dogs. Check with your local librarian for opportunities in your area.)
  15. Download a free Dogs Preschool Pack from Homeschool Creations.
  16. Play dog literacy games at PBS Kids.
  17. Make a word cloud of things that start with D.
  18. Create a dog in a “Magic Envelope.”
  19. Read Aesop’s fable “The Dog and His Reflection.”
  20. Make a dog from the letter D.
