We are happy to join the team of co-hosts for the Poppins Book Nook virtual book club for kids! This month’s theme is Where in the World? For more information on Poppins Book Nook, check out Enchanted Homeschooling Mom’s page with all the details.

I chose the book In New York by Marc Brown for this month’s theme. We loved it. The illustrations are awesome, watercolor and gouache on illustration board using brushes and sponges…according to the information in the back of the book.

We loved all the little trivia facts and sketches on the inside covers, front and back. Things like the fact that there are more than 13,000 taxis in New York City! We actually thought this sounded low to us considering there are over 8 million people living there.

Activity Ideas for In New York

We kept it super simple this month. We had some illness, birthdays, and some general life chaos that kept us busy. Here’s how we used this book:

1. We read it together. Too simple for you? Well, sometimes in our haste to do all the good activities there are floating around the internet, I think we forget that reading together is a pretty important one! I read the book out loud, stopping to show them each illustration and we inevitably ended up discussing things like whether or not we could live in NYC (3 out of 4 said no).

2. Coloring. My kids like to color. I found an awesome coloring book by Rod and Staff called United States Coloring Book at our homeschool convention, so the kids colored the New York pages as they listened. This coloring book has the state’s shape, a famous landmark from the state, and various symbols (state bird, flower, tree, and more).

Unfortunately, Amazon does not have this particular coloring book, but I do know that Dover coloring books are usually pretty good and they have a United States coloring book.

3. Listing what we know. One of the trivia bits in the book is that there are at least 170 languages spoken in NYC. We decided to list how many we could think of (13!) and then look it up in the google to see what we missed. The kids had fun with this super simple activity.

4. Food. We had bagels with cream cheese for lunch one day and pizza for dinner, both are mentioned in the book. You could make your own bagels, but I don’t. We do make our own pizza though.

See? Simple.
