Amish Fiction for Adults

A Miracle of Hope by Ruth Reid

This is a new favorite of mine. It’s well-written, and the story moves quickly. A Miracle of Hope is the first in a new series entitled Amish Wonders. This is a story of an unwed mother in an arranged marriage facing some very difficult decisions all within the confines of the Amish community.

Hopeful by Shelley Shepard Gray

This is also the first book in a new series entitled “Return to Sugarcreek.” In this book, we follow along as Miriam pines over Junior and Junior pines over Mary Kate. Mary Kate, with painful secrets of her own, tries to dissuade Junior’s affections. I enjoyed watching the three main characters work through their emotions to find their ‘right path’ at the end.

The Bridesmaid by Beverly Lewis

Beverly Lewis is a well-known Amish fiction writer. I thoroughly enjoyed this book which follows Joanna Kurtz, a young woman who struggles with being an old maid by Amish standards. She has a secret hobby and a distant love, but will she be able to overcome these obstacles and walk down the aisle as a bride instead of a bridesmaid?

Amish Fiction for Kids

Life With Lily by Suzanne Woods Fisher

My ten-year-old really enjoyed the first two books in this series. She was intrigued by the simplicity of Lily’s lifestyle. She thought the books were “sweet” and “funny.”

Just Like Momma by Beverly Lewis

Follow along as sweet Susie Mae sets out to be “just like momma.” She tackles mommas chores for a day. This beautifully illustrated picture book is a great introduction to the Amish lifestyle. Even more than that, it is a sweet picture of a loving mother/daughter relationship.

Double Trouble series by Wanda E. Brunstetter

This series of books looks super cute! Written for elementary-aged readers, these books follow the adventures of Amish twins Mark and Mattie Miller. There are currently four books in this chapter-book series.
