The weather in our neck of the woods has cooled off and the leaves are just starting to turn colors. Fall is definitely in the air! My boys and I picked out some of our favorite picture books and put together a list for you to use on your next library adventure. The bottom of this post has both a printable and mobile ready book list for you.

Nuts to You by Lois Ehlert – A mischievous little squirrel wanders into the city and finds adventure by squeezing through a hole in a window screen. Here are three ideas for literary extensions at Growing Book by Book.
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert – A beautiful picture book showing the life cycle of a tree. Teaching Mama has a fun treat you can make for the birds. 3 Dinosaurs has an easy yarn craft to create your own red and yellow tree.
Counting on Fall by Lizann Flatt – A darling counting book featuring cut-paper collages.
Earl the Squirrel by Don Freeman – Follow Earl’s adventure as he learns where to find his own acorns. Little Bins for Little Hands as a great example of how you can use a sensory tub to make reading a hands on activity.
Hello, Squirrels! By Linda Glaser – Follow a group of baby squirrels as the seasons change from spring to winter. There’s Just One Mommy shows how her kids buried nuts and build their own nests.
The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall – A story of picking apples and baking a pie, with a recipe at the end.
Harvest Song by Ron Hirschi – A story of life on a farm from planting to harvest.
Fall by Ron Hirschi – Real life photography of plants and animals in fall. One of our favorites!
A Friend for All Seasons by Julia Hubery – A sweet story about a little raccoon who learns about the seasons as the leaves on their oak tree begin to change colors and fall. There’s Just One Mommy has two activities using real leaves to accompany this story.
Hooray for Fall by Kazuo Iwamura – Follow three little squirrels as they prepare for winter.
Applesauce Season by Eden Ross Lipson – After buying apples from the farmers market, its time to make some applesauce using the secret family recipe.
Ten Red Apples by Virginia Miller – A fun counting book for little ones featuring Bartholomew Bear.
Apple Cider Making Days by Ann Purmell – The whole family joins in to help make apple cider at grandpa’s apple farm.
Maple Syrup Season by Ann Prumell – Join Hannah and Hayden on their horse-drawn sled as they help the family make maple syrup from Grandpa’s “sugar bush”.
Fall Mixed Up by Bob Raczka – A young boy gets the names of the fall months mixed up, and some unexpected situations result.
Bear Has a Story to Tell by Philip C. Snead – Bear has a story to tell, but all his friends are too busy preparing for winter to listen to him.
Leaves by David Ezra Stein – The story of a young bear’s first fall. Follow along as he sees the leaves turn colors and start to fall.
Apples, Apples, Apples by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace – Fun felt characters show you the parts of an apple and the life cycle of an apple tree.
Leaves, Leaves, Leaves by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace – Follow leaves through all season, from buds to brightly colored fall leaves.

Pumpkin Fiesta by Caryn Yacowitz – Learn the secrets to growing a prize winning pumpkin from Old Juana.
Pumpkin Baby by Jane Yolen – A sweet fall story about becoming a big sister.
The Scarecrow’s Dance by Jane Yolen – A scarecrow leaves the corn field to dance through the night with the crows only to learn how important his job really is.
I find the hardest part of taking my young boys with me to the library is looking up books in the catalog. I prepared this list for you (and me) to make finding books faster and easier. I download the mobile version on my ipod/iphone to take with me. You can also print off the list if that is easier for you!

There are so many great titles on this list! I especially love Bear Has a Story to Tell and Applesauce Season. Another favorite of mine is Fall is Not Easy by Marty Kelley, where a poor tree just can’t seem to get its leaves to change color properly, resulting in lots of silliness.
Love the list! Thank you for the printable list too! I have stopped trying to actually look for books at the library with my kids in tow. I always use my county’s online reservation system. The books I am looking for are in a nice pile at the front of the library when I arrive and I can actually enjoy the time there with my kids instead of trying to keep one eye on them and search for books at the same time.
