Our family loves to spend time at the beach!
We live in Florida which makes it easy to slip away to the beach often. Shelling and exploring the tide pools are our favorite activities. There are always so many interesting creatures to discover during an early morning walk on the beach.
For those times when we can’t be at the beach we often find ways to bring the beach to us through books and art.
Beach Books
Here are a few of our family’s favorite books about the beach:
Clam-I-Am! All About the Beach (Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library) by Tish Rabe – Learn all about life at the beach with the Cat in the Hat and his friends. (for ages 4+)
A Walk on the Beach: Into the Field Guide by Laurie Goldman – The perfect field guide for children! Use this book to learn about the shells, creatures, and plants kids will find on a beach walk. (for ages 5+)
S is for Sea Glass: A Beach Alphabet by Richard Michelson – Beautiful watercolor illustrations and a variety of poetry forms help the reader celebrate life at the beach. (for ages 7+)
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell – This is the story of Karana, and Indian girl who lived alone for years on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. (for ages 9+)
Any of the nature books by Suzanne Tate – We particularly like Rosie Ray: A Tale of Watery Wings, Crabby & Nabby: Tale of Blue Crabs, and Mary Manatee: A Tale of Sea Cows. (for children of all ages)
Art at the Beach
A few months ago our friends introduced us to chalk pastel art and we have quickly become big fans.
Chalk pastels are bright and colorful, and easy to use. Using chalks is a lot like painting, but it is ever messier which we really enjoy!
To celebrate summer we have been using the tutorials from Chalk Pastels: Art at the Beach to help us create beautiful beach scenes with chalk.
To give you an idea of how to use chalk pastels, you can view a free video tutorial to learn how to draw a beach umbrella.
In addition to the beach umbrella, we have also learned to draw a manatee and bright red sand bucket! Some of the other drawings we plan to complete from the Art at the Beach ebook include a jellyfish, starfish, a path to the beach and a dolphin.
We hope you have a fun and colorful summer at the beach!
