Frog, Where Are You? by Mercer Mayer (a review)

“Frog is missing and the boy doesn’t see him anywhere. Can the boy and his dog find their new friend?” So is the description of this very clever wordless book from the great children’s author Mercer Mayer. This book is one of the several in a series first brought to life in the book A Boy, a Dog and a Frog, Mercer Mayer’s very first published book.

Our family loves Mercer Mayer books, but we’ve only known him through his widely successful and much loved Little Critter series. His illustrations are so memorable and capture the love of all ages, but especially the very young. When I first found the book Frog, Where Are You? I didn’t even make the connection that it was the same author…but as we flipped through it the style seemed very familiar and when we went back and read the author’s name again it made perfect sense.

Frog, Where Are You? is a wordless picture book which tells the story of the boy’s quest to find his frog after waking up to see his empty jar. The saying “a picture is worth 1000 words” is definitely true with this book. My three year old could easily tell me the story after searching each picture for clues. We all enjoyed finding little hidden extras in the photos which enhanced this wordless story.

The pictures are pen and ink drawings which has an added charm. It inspired my seven year old to try to replicate the style in his own drawings.

This book is excellent for the “littles” because they can “read” it completely on their own, which means that they might be willing to sit and just flip through pages to take it all in by themselves. I know my littlest was!

Now that we’ve discovered this other branch of books by Mercer Mayer, we plan on finding the rest of the series and adding them to our Mercer Mayer collection!
