The leaves are starting to turn colors here in Indiana. My children and I have enjoyed taking walks and collecting leaves, sticks, and acorns. Recently we read Autumn Leaves by Ken Robbins and then did a fun hands-on art project.
Autumn Leaves is a great fall book that describes the process of how the leaves magically change colors in the fall. There are also photos of a variety of tree leaves in their various stages of autumn splendor. We enjoyed the book, as it was a quick read before our walk.
For this art project, you will need empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls, seasonal foam stickers, paper, and paint. You can also use paintbrushes and something to cover your work surface.
I found these foam stickers at Michaels:
We used only the leaves and saved the rest for future projects. A 40% off coupon or sale makes these a great deal.
We took the stickers and covered our tubes with them. This is mine, the kids used more stickers.
Then we tried using a paint brush to put the paint on the stickers, but that was taking too long (paint was drying). So we put some puddles of paint on our box, spread it out kind of thin and rolled our tubes in it.
Then we rolled the tubes across our paper to make prints.
We layered colors and had a rather messy, totally fun time. That gave us unique art prints like this:
You can find Autumn Leaves at your library in the juvenile non-fiction section at j581.48 qR634 1998.
I love those foam stickers! Great art activity! I think a trip to Michael’s is in order for me. 🙂
So fun! Thank you!
