Are you a lover of children’s books by Lois Lenski? If you aren’t familiar with her name, her books might cue your memory. She’s written lovely books like Strawberry Girl, Praire School, and Houseboat Girl for the young reader. But she might be most famous for her books for the littles. She’s written delightful books like Cowboy Small, Policeman Small, The Little Airplane and the Little Fire Engine. Today my review covers one of her other books (and a family favorite) The Little Train.
The Little Train is a board book making it ideal for little hands to hold and turn pages–and dare I say it, even chew on! This book follow Engineer Small as he prepares his shiny black engine for a journey and then along the journey itself. The illustrations are simple and colorful with a part of the train on every page. My three year old loves this. He’s a big train fan and this book meets his full expectations.
The words in the book are at an easy reader level and my 7 year old likes to read it to his brother. He will even ask his brother to find things on the pages: “Do you see the bridge? How many sailboats are there? Where is the smokestack?”
Because the illustrations follow the story very well, once my three year old was familiar with the story he could almost tell it back to me just looking at the illustrations. This is what makes this book great for that age group. But my oldest son enjoys the book almost as much.
I highly recommend The Little Train as well as all of the other hardcover/board books by Lois Lenski for your littles. They will love the photos and the simple stories and become family favorites!
