I like to sew. I don’t have near as much time to sew as I would like, but I still like to look at sewing books and fabric. I can dream, right? A goal of mine is to teach all of my children to sew, too. None of them have to become a great seamstress, but being able to mend clothing is a great money-saving life skill.

Today’s list is a combination of my favorite books already on my shelves, favorites to check out from our library, and those on my Amazon wishlist.

Learning to Sew Books

Sewing School & Sewing School 2 – Sewing School is about hand-sewing techniques and the second book is about working with a machine. Both are by Andria Lisle and Amie Plumley. We own the first. It’s a great book.

Buckles & Bobbins: A Beginning Sewing Book for Boys by JoAnn Gagnon – This is the first book I’ve ever seen geared to teaching boys sewing. It’s on my wishlist. Wish Amazon had a better cover photo for it.

Sewing for Adults Books

One-Yard Wonders by Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins- This book comes with many patterns for lots of different projects, all made with one yard of fabric or less. This is a great way to keep your material costs low.

Sew Pretty T-Shirt Dresses: More Than 25 Easy, Pattern-Free Designs for Little Girls by Sweet Seams – The t-shirt dress is very popular for beginner to intermediate sewers because you don’t have to sew the arm and neck holes.

Pattern Making for Kids’ Clothes: All You Need to Know About Designing, Adapting, and Customizing Sewing Patterns for Children’s Clothing by Carla Hegeman Crim – I just discovered this on Amazon and it has me excited! I knew Carla WAY back in my “custom boutique” sewing on eBay days. You can find some of her epatterns on You Can Make This!

Boutique Casual for Boys and Girls by Sue Kim – This one isn’t out yet, but looks cute!

Sewing for Boys: 24 Projects to Create a Handmade Wardrobe by Shelly Figueroa – The reviews on this are mixed, but it could be worth checking to see if your library has a copy before buying.

Oliver + S Little Things to Sew: 20 Classic Accessories and Toys for Children by Liesl Gibson – I know a toddler who would love the little penguin backpack. Actually, I’d like it for my winter decorating. It’s cute.
