With Summer upon us, I thought it was only fitting to bring you my favorite collection of Books About Gardens. These books are so fun and make you want to plant your own garden! Gardening is a great activity you can do with your children (big or small), so enjoy these books and hopefully you get to plant your own flower or vegetable garden this year!
1. The Curious Garden by Peter Brown – Liam was out exploring one day when he discovers a garden that was dying, so he decides to take care of it. As time goes on, the garden gets bigger and bigger eventually bringing a new life to a dark, gray world. This book is full of enchanting illustrations. As an added bonus, red-head Liam is in every illustration, adding a great seek-and-find element to the book.
2. The Magic School Bus Plants Seeds by Joanna Cole – Magic School Bus books are just “magical.” They are packed full of educational information that make it fun for any child to learn. While Ms. Frizzle and her students decide to take the Magic Bus to Phoebe’s old school to get her flowers, they actually end up inside the flowers! This book provides children with a great adventure into how things grow!
3. Jack’s Garden by Henry Cole – This book is so fun because it follows the same rhythm as the story, “This is The House That Jack Built.” Each page adds a different element to planting a garden, and the part I like best is that there are illustrations of various gardening tools along the edges of the pages with their labels. This is perfect for kids to make the connection between words and pictures. By the end of the book, the reader will see a lush, beautiful garden.
4. Peppa Pig and the Vegetable Garden – Peppa Pig and her little brother, George, decide to help Grandpa Pig plant a garden. Through their adventure they learn that gardens contain more than just flowers and vegetables; they also have “monsta” snails, bugs, and butterflies! At the end of the story, Peppa picks the ingredients to make a salad.
5. Garden to Table by Katherine Hengel – This is a beginner’s guide to gardening! There are step-by-step instructions on how to plant your own garden, plus over 30 delicious recipes you can make using the new plants, herbs, and veggies from your garden! I love this book because it contains a TON of awesome vocabulary words for your child to learn from different ingredients to different cooking terms.
6. My Garden by Kevin Henkes I love this book because of it’s beautiful, soft illustrations and use of imagery. The little girl in this book grows tomatoes as big as beach balls and chocolate bunnies in her garden, plus more! This book encourages your child to use his or her imagination and to come up with their own garden! There’s no limit to what you can grow!
7. Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert – This book helps children learn how to plant bulbs and seeds, and how to care for them so they grow. Each page in this book presents a different color of the rainbow and has a collage of various flowers for that color. The illustrations in this book are truly beautiful.
8. Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert – This book is all about growing the vegetables to make soup. All the necessary tools labeled, as well as what seeds you need to plant and grow. The illustrations in this book are very child-friendly and engaging!
That’s it! I hope you enjoy my collection of Books About Gardens!
Happy Reading!
