It’s a new year. School is back in session. Dance season has picked back up. Life is getting busy again for me – and so many of you. Each month in my homeschool, I assign my 5th grader a “required” reading list. This list consists of books I want her to read rather than books she’s choosing for herself. Some of the books come from various homeschool catalogs and/or websites. Some come from “100 books every child MUST read” types of lists. Others are favorites from my childhood or my days of teaching elementary school. I choose books from several different genres for her to read so she broadens her scope of reading.

I’ve decided to make one of these lists for myself. I’d like to do this each month along with my fifth grader to broaden my own horizons. I am a lover of fiction. I don’t typically enjoy non-fiction books. I never pick up a book of poetry to read. Ever. Unless I’m reading an old favorite to my daughter, I tend to find the classics a little slow going. However, if I’m going to challenge her to broaden her horizons, I should do the same. So, here goes…
Required Reading for Momma
Just a note… My genres are a bit different than those I assign for my daughter, but I have 6 categories like she does.
Non-Fiction: One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp ~ This book goes along with my word for the year – thrive. If I can count the blessings in my everyday, I can thrive in 2014!
Fiction: Divergent series by Veronica Roth ~ I’m reading these with my high-schooler before the movie comes out. He read the first one last year, and received the entire series for Christmas. If this series is anything like Hunger Games, I may beat my high-schooler to the end of the book.
Historical Fiction: The Dancing Master by Julie Klassen ~ I’m currently reading this one for a review. I thoroughly enjoy historical fiction, and this one has started out well.
Parenting: The Ministry of Motherhood: Following Christ’s Example in Reaching the Hearts of Our Children by Sally Clarkson ~ It’s time to refocus my energy on the things that matter the most!
Blogging Help: How to Blog for Profit Without Selling Your Soul by Ruth Soukup ~ I’m really looking forward to reading this book. I’m actually reading it right now as part of a book club with other bloggers. It’s great being able to discuss the book with like-minded ladies.
Classic: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee ~ This is a favorite of mine from high school. My high schooler had to read it this year, and it has made me want to reread it. I hope it’s even better the second time around!
Do you have a reading list for the upcoming year? What’s on it?

Good list! Yes on To Kill A Mockingbird! It IS even better the second time around! I just reread it last year. Amazing descriptions.
