“Mr. Willowby’s Christmas tree
Came by special delivery.
Full and fresh and glistening green –
The biggest tree he had ever seen.”
One of our family’s favorite holiday books as always been Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree. Even this year as my 12 year old was unpacking the holiday decorations he stopped and read the fun and happy book.
The Christmas tree IS actually the star of this story. When Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree arrives it is too large for even his grand house. To make it fit, the top is chopped off and given to Miss Adelaide. She is very pleased with her new tree, but finds it is too large for her space as well. She proceeds to chop the top off of her tree and places it outside where the gardener founds the discarded tree top. He takes his discovery home to use as his own tree, but finds it is too big for his space as well. As the story continues parts of the tree become holiday decorations for the bear, fox, rabbit, and mouse families.
We decided the perfect holiday crafts for this book should include a tasty tree and a colorful mouse.
Christmas Mouse Ornament
This easy mouse ornament requires just a few supplies:
- Print Christmas Mouse Ornament template and instructions
- Scissors
- Felt
- Googly eyes
- Small pom-poms
- Candy canes
- Craft glue
Use the mouse template to cut out the mouse body and ears from felt. Next, attach the googly eyes and pom-pom nose. Finally, slide the candy cane through the loop to create the mouse’s tail. You can then hang your mouse ornament on your own Christmas tree when complete.
Ice Cream Cone Christmas Tree
Supplies:
- Sugar ice cream cones
- White icing
- Green food coloring
- Edible sprinkles/decorations
- Bowl
- Knife/spoon/spatula
Put icing in a bowl. Add a few drops of green food coloring and stir with spoon until well blended.
Turn the ice cream cone upside down so it looks like a Christmas tree shape.
Use knife or spatula to apply icing to the cone.
Apply sprinkles/decorations to the iced cone.
We always liked using an edible Christmas tree to go along with this book. My children would often make multiple trees and eat away portions of the cones to represent the various trees in the story.
We hope your family enjoys these holiday crafts and this very special story!
